Geographic Distribution of Grain Cradle Patents

While the majority of 19th century patents in most classes arose in the more populous East, there is a conspicuous lack of patents originating from the major wheat growing states, even in the 2nd half of the century. Likewise, Illinois, with its vast expanse of perfectly flat, rock free farm land, gave rise to not a single patent for a cradle, while each of its six border states yielded at least one patent. Indiana inventors received seven patents.
