The Globe Phone

An unusual variant of the Otophone, marked "Globe Phone Mfg Co., Boston". The metal diaphragm in this example would be covered by James Maloney's patent of April 30, 1895 for his "Otophone". However, the instrument is not marked with a patent date. The usual form of Maloney's Otophone, as sold by E.B. Meyrowitz, has an identically mounted diaphragm and case and is fitted with a 90 degree elbow, as in this case, but without the flexible tube (see issue 16, July 1994). The overall length is 44 inches, including a 6" handle on the ear end. An uncommon instrument in very fine condition.
