Johnston Brace and Buggy Wrench

A combination tool patented by Samuel Johnston of Leesburg, VA, Dec 4, 1894. Marked “P. Lowentraut, Newark, NJ” and “Territories for sale by S.J. Johnston, Leesburg, VA, Pat Dec 4, 1894” It serves as a buggy wrench, bit brace, and screw driver. The handle can be mounted in two positions. A locking pin with spring prevents the handle from unscrewing when used as a brace. Actually, the brace configuration was primarily used to allow the jaws to enter the recess in a wheel hub to turn the axle nut.
The screw works smoothly, the jaws are in good condition and the wood has no cracks.
the alternate configuration as monkey wrench and screw driver
