Ship Auger Bits

A group of 13 ship augers with ratcheting handle. The bits are all without center screw and have various maker's names, J.T. Pugh, Phila; Greenlee, Watrous, C.E. Jennings, NYC. Sizes vary from 5/8" to 1 1/4".

Moving a small lever on the auger handle selects right ratchet, locked position, or left ratchet. The two jaw chuck adjusts to fit all square tapered shank bits. One of the handles turns freely and can be positioned on top of the tool to allow easier ratcheting.

This type of bit is described below from the 1897 Chas Strelinger catalog reprint:
Ship Augers and Ship Auger Bits are intended for hard woods. They are very strong and durable, will bore a clean hole and cut very fast, the cut being made fine or very coarse, according to the angle at which the lip is filed. The Augers and Bits without Screw will bore straighter than any other style, on account of there being no screw point to follow the grain or seams in the wood. These Augers are also excellent for boring in end wood. These Bits are intended for hard woods only, are very strong and durable, and will stand more "grief " than any other style of bit. The price of the Bits are the same, either with or without Screw.

The bits are in very good condition and the ratchet handle works fine.
